Hearing is a two-way street.

For those who hear well, communicating with loved ones with hearing loss can challenging. Here are tips on how to hear each other better:

  1. Face the person you are speaking with directly.
  2. Make sure there is no distracting or loud background noise.
  3. Speak clearly.
  4. Speak at a moderate speed.
  5. Do not over-emphasize words.
  6. Do not shout.
  7. Use hand gestures, when possible.
  8. Be patient.
  9. Maintain a calm and relaxed posture.
  10. Display respect for the person with hearing loss to help build confidence.

For those with hearing loss, communicating with friends and family can be difficult. Here are tips on how to hear each other better:

  1. Choose your stage: Where is the best place to talk with you? A well-lit area or a quiet location, for example.
  2. Face the person you are speaking with directly.
  3. Focus and concentrate on the person with whom you are speaking.
  4. Remain calm and relaxed. Do not assume the worst will happen and that you will not hear what they are saying.
  5. Be alert for visual clues like hand gestures.
  6. Be patient and do not interrupt. Conversations have a natural flow and often the blank spaces are filled.
  7. Be positive and confident.
  8. Do not fake it. If you do not understand something that is said, let the person know.
  9. Let the person know how well they are communicating with you.
  10. Communicate as best you can with humor and joy. If you are having repeated difficulty understanding, rather than let frustration get the better of you, consider taking a break.
